Since you've asked for such imput, what you're referring to (--, or —) isn't a "dash," it's actually an em dash or a "long" dash. Simply using "dash" could be understood as the "-" which is clealy inadequate.
But, you're right — both the em dash and the semicolon are woefully underused; we should all resolve to better involve them in our daily lives.
